Sociocultural Anthropology at UCSD

Program Description

The subfield of Sociocultural Anthropology currently is composed of faculty members whose research interests and expertise cover regions of Asia, the Pacific, Europe, and the hemisphere of the Americas.  The faculty share an interest in social and cultural theory along with a commitment to innovative empirical research.  Their work explores questions about the workings of language in society, the complexities of human subjectivity, contemporary transformations of religion, and the contradictions of state formation, capitalism and modernity.  Sociocultural Anthropology at UCSD is organized around four areas that reflect the core strengths and concerns of the Faculty:

Anthropology of Modernity;
Anthropology of Religion;
Anthropology of Language;
Psychological Anthropology.

Students at the undergraduate and graduate level may work within and across these concentrations.  Faculty often are oriented toward more than one program.  Besides an array of lecture and seminar courses, each concentration organizes periodic workshops, reading groups and speaker series throughout the academic year. We invite you to follow the links to read more about these four concentrations of inquiry and learning in our department.
