Applying for Graduate Study

Program descriptions, course offerings, faculty interests, and similar information may be found on other pages of this site.

M.A. & Ph.D. Degrees
There is no separate admission for students seeking only a master's degree. Doctoral students normally receive a master's degree en route to the doctoral degree.

 Application Forms
The open period for applications begins each November for admission the following fall. Potential applicants must apply on-line.
Before applying, interested prospective students are encouraged to review our program descriptions and the listing of faculty and their interests.

 Application Deadline
The deadline for the submission of admissions applications and associated materials is January 10 for admission the following Fall Quarter.

 Minimum GRE Score
There is no fixed minimum GRE score. However, most of our accepted students have a combined GRE score above 2000 (summing Verbal, Quantitative, and old-style Analytical scores).

 Minimum College GPA
General university regulations require a minimum college GPA of B (3.0). The department itself has no separate requirement. Few if any of our accepted students in recent years have had a GPA below B+, however. Many applicants have straight As in their undergraduate anthropology classes.

 Minimum TOEFL Score
(for international students who are not native speakers of English)
In general, the department has regarded a TOEFL score of 600 (old norms) or 300 (new norms) as representing the minimum English competence at which a student can function successfully in our program.

Students from non-Anglophone countries are required to take a test of spoken English after their arrival on campus before they are permitted to accept a position as teaching assistant.

 Required College Major
A college major in anthropology is not required, although it is usual. We have had successful graduate students with undergraduate backgrounds in a wide range of fields.

 UCSD Undergraduates
The department has no policy either favoring or discouraging applications from present UCSD undergraduates. However some faculty members do believe that it is in a student's best interest to change schools for graduate study.

The choice of a graduate program depends on your academic interests and goals, and may or may not include UCSD as an appropriate graduate school for you. Feel free to discuss your plans with the graduate adviser or other faculty members.
