Anthropology Courses

Lower-division offerings (those numbered 1 to 99) seek to provide a basic orientation to the broad and basic ideas and methods of anthropological investigation and a familiarity with case materials from a number of different societies.

  • UCSD Colleges which require a "sequence" vary in which courses they consider to be usable together. Always consult a college adviser.
  • Students who intend to major or minor in archaeological anthropology are advised to take ANTH 3.
  • Students who intend to major or minor in biological anthropology must take ANTH 2 (or equivalent), which is prerequisite to most upper-division biological anthropology courses.
  • ERC students who complete MMW-1 may use it in lieu of ANTH 1 where the latter is a prerequisite. The same is true of CAT 1 if taught by anthropology faculty.

Upper-division offerings (those numbered aobve 99) are more specialized. They are offered both to majors/minors and to other students. A small number have various prerequisites, which should be checked before registering. In some cases a prerequisite can be waived by the instructor if a student has comparable background.
