This page is for exhibitions, expeditions, concert series, and other activites that continue over a period of time. All strike me as potentially interesting, although not necessarily relevant to any courses I am teaching.

The Art of Andean Retablos: Religion, Tradition, and Social Commentary
Place: Museum of Man (Balboa Park) (Museum Information)
This exhibit explores and discusses the art of the retablo, specifically the works of artist Nicario Jimenez Quispe. Retablos —the term in this case refers to the potato-starch figures placed in boxes to make dioramas— first came to Peru in the 16th century. Brought by the Spanish Conquistadors, they were used in the Old World as portable altars for travelers and also carried into battle by warriors during the Crusades. Today they have evolved into an important form of Peruvian folk art.

Heroes: Mortals & Myths in Ancient Greece
Place: San Diego Museum of Art (Balboa Park) (Museum Information)
This traveling exhibit, originated by the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, will tour several museums across the country. It includes about 100 objects "that explore the inherent human need for heroes by using ancient Greek culture as a point of origin. Greek history and mythology are especially rich in various kinds of heroes, who were represented in the arts but were also the object of cults, receiving sacrifices and offerings from worshipers who sought their intervention."
